In towns throughout Ontario, there are startling reminders of the colonization of Indigenous territories and the displacement of First Nations people. Anishinaabe comedian and activist Ryan McMahon takes us to his hometown of Fort Frances and down its main drag, which is called Colonization Road. Similar streets have similar names in towns and cities across the province, direct reminders of the Public Lands Act of 1853 and its severe impact on First Nations, their treaties and their land in the name of “Canadian settlement.” On his journey through Ontario, McMahon explores the history of these roads, meets with settlers in solidarity and raises significant questions about “reconciliation” and what it means to “decolonize.”

About Jayli Wolf

Jayli Wolf is Saulteau, she was raised in small town Creston, BC. She began writing music at the age of 15, when she was lent an acoustic guitar for a few days. She immediately fell in love with playing the instrument, singing, and writing her own songs. In 2012, Jayli won a songwriting contest through APTN called First Tracks and was flown to Toronto to shoot a music video. She ended up staying in the big city, with just a suitcase and a guitar. In 2013 Jayli started a band with her partner, Hayden John Wolf, called Once A Tree. Since the release of the band’s first EP, her music has made it onto media outlets such as Billboard, MTV, Complex, Vice, Much, and Buzzfeed.

Lacey Hill

Watch as she takes the stage. Isn’t she gorgeous? She sits on her stool, or chair, or on the edge of the stage, and her long hair slides down her shoulder. The guitar settles comfortable in her hold as she plucks a few strings and tunes it to her liking. Then she strums. Her music is set on fire by her distinct voice. You keep watching her. The vocals are delicate, yet powerful. She makes her guitar sing too. One song is happy. Another is sad. Her third is jealous and spiteful. Now you’re watching and listening. Each one, you find, is stuffed with honesty. Each one, you find, rings with the energy Lacey used to create something wonderful from pain. Each one, you find, fills you with something you dismiss as deja vu. The melodies wash over you, her lyrics, carried by her voice, weave something unspeakable in and outside of her guitar playing. She’s something. You keep listening and you’re ecstatic and touched and haunted all at once.

The last notes fade from the air. She stands up. She smiles. “Thank you.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

6 Arrows Media set to launch in November 2014.

Multimedia house Thru the RedDoor, Juno award-winning musician Derek Miller, and musician/media professional Marty Ballentyne (Breach of Trust, Inez Jasper, George Leach), have come together to execute a shared vision– creating an unparalleled creative environment and next-generation studio experience.

The team is proud to announce their partnership and the official launch of 6 Arrows Media (6AM).

“Our core team at RedDoor is excited and humbled to be working with these tremendously talented individuals. With our combined resources and vision, we say with confidence 6 Arrows Media is aligned to become a behemoth multimedia hub in Indian Country and beyond,” said Gary Joseph, 6AM Partner and Project Manager at Thru the RedDoor.

“Our Nov. 1 launch event will be streamed live from our Ohsweken studio, will be viewable on our website, and will demonstrate our capabilities as 6AM. Viewers can look forward to dynamic web content, original programming, and live-streamed events for years to come.”

6AM combines recording, photography, and video production technologies, spaces for live performances, live streaming, and all the capabilities of an internet service provider– in one place.

“We’re eager to share what we’ve been working on. 6AM will be able to take those artists who are next door to you on the reserve, and give them every tool they need to be successful. We have the technology, we have the industry experience, and we have the vision. It is our hope that this company is there to give artists the boost that people like Marty and I didn’t have when we began. This is our way of giving back,” said Derek Miller, 6AM partner and Juno award-winning musician.

“I think, deep down, people just want to do cool stuff with cool people,” said Marty, now based in Toronto. “I believe in collaboration, honouring one’s roots and paying forward what we’ve learned. I am grateful to Derek, Gary and Shane for their invitation to get involved soon after moving to Ontario. A nice welcome! To all who may be interested – let’s talk. Come visit and see what we’re up to. We’d like to know what you’re doing and how we might be able to help.”

6AM is nestled in the heart of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, and combines media production with the power and flexibility of the Internet, meaning next-gen service and virtually instant content distribution.

The doors will be thrown open with an exclusive kick-off celebration Nov. 1, 2014.

Full Details to follow.
